Konami has announced Metal Gear Survive — a new four-player, online co-op game set within the Metal Gear universe. The trailer for the game, which is due out on Xbox One, PS4 and PC in 2017, was revealed at Gamescom, and is the first Metal Gear title produced by Konami since the departure of franchise creator Hideo Kojima.
Survive takes place after the events of Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes (the prequel toThe Phantom Pain), with soldiers from the mercenary corporation Militaires Sans Frontières sucked through a wormhole into an alternate universe. "Players find themselves on distorted desert landscapes full of massive half-formed structures, living biological threats, and the remains of a once strong military force now litter the landscape," said Konami in a press release. "Metal Gear Survive will offer a fresh take on the series’ famed stealth elements but within a unique co-op setting that is designed for a truly engrossing multi-player experience."
If the trailer is anything to go by, though, this fresh take on MGS's stealth elements looks more like a zombie mode from a Call of Duty title, with players keeping hordes of crystal-headed monsters at bay. The game's trailer has met with a mixed reaction online, with fans bemoaning the apparent absence of franchise-lead Snake. Konami says it'll be releasing more information about Survive at Gamescom.
